Mr and Mrs John Hoyle, 9 Carlton Grove, Shipley, formerly of Denaby Main, where Mr John Hoyle was for many years headmaster of the Denaby Main colliery school, have been officially notified of the death in action, on July 29 of their only son, Private Cyril C Hoyle, Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment.

He was an old boy of Denaby Main and Mexborough secondary school. On leaving school he was apprenticed to the London and Provincial production company, engravers and lithographers, Bradford, where he was employed when he joined the colours in January 1916. He had been earlier rejected on account of defective eyesight.

Mr John Hoyle writing to his says: “Although overwhelmed with grief at their loss, his mother and father are proud that he died the noblest death; that he gave his life for King and country, fighting for the most glorious cause, that of freedom and the preservation of thei homes of England.”

Capt A.D.Pereira of private Hoyle´s company, writing to Mrs Hoyle says:

“Dear Mrs Hoyle – I am writing to tell you the sad news that your son Private C.C.Hoyle was killed in action on the night on July 29th. I would have written before, but I was wounded on 10 July, and only rejoined the company a few days ago. The company was making an attack when the C.S.M.was wounded. Your son was bandaging his wound when they were both shot and killed.

I did not know your address, so I opened one of your letters to get it. Your son was with the company throughout the recent fighting, and did very well. If I can do anything for you in anyway, will you write and let me know? May I offer you and his father my deepest sympathy.”
