Goalkeeper defies United.

Denaby United 1 Heanor Town 0

A spirited performance by Denaby United’s frontline against Heanor Town at Tickhill Square on Saturday was enough to outpoint their opponents , who never really settled into the game .

Heanor showed promised early on, with their forwards linking up well , but it was that final pass that “did” then , so often Denaby’s trouble

But On Saturday the home forwards played with renewed vigour , not the end of season “stuff ” some teams offer at this time of the year

Brian Monk covered a lot of ground , fetching and carrying , and right winger Gray , always a trier, give the home fans something to cheer about.

After the first 10 minutes Denaby were always quicker into the tackle and quicker on the ball , and although they are in the middleof the Midland League , some month, showed and with the football they can produce they should be higher in t League

it was a defensive errorthat gave Denaby. The one and only goal of the match, after only 3 min ,Gray Gray received the ball on the right, his centre found three unmarked Denaby forwards and it was Monk who scored from close range.

Brilliant Statham

Now it was the only ill luck a brilliant goalkeeping by Heanor’s goalkeeper , Statham , that kept Denaby’s lead down to one goal.

Another centre from Gray caused havoc in the Heanor defence . Monk’s shot at goal was cleared just in time by right back Clarke, but the ball again came to Gray, who rounded Newson and his rising shot, was brilliantly pushed over the bar by Statham . Minutes earlier Statham had saved what looked a certain goal when he saved at the feet of King , who had slipped two defenders with ease

in the second half Denaby never let up, although their goal did and one narrow escape when Walsh headed goalwards from a centre from the lack , but Hoough got his fingers to the ball and turned it round the post . But this was the only time in the second half the home goal was threatened, and a Denaby player hit the bar.

Roy Ainscough went close with two “first times” and Monk missed a chance when he hit a centre from the right high and wide, but the main reason for Denaby not scoDenaby not scoring.

Denaby team:

Hough; Foster, Iggo; Porter, Wright , Ainscough; Gray , Jones, King, Monk , Hall
