Meeting of School Board.

After the dispatch of a report of the meeting the 21st inst, the Board proceeded to the election of Clerk. The following is a list of the candidates with their proposed stipends:

Mr Batty, Bolton £25.

Mr Grigsby, Doncaster £15.

Mr Allen, Conisbrough, £12 10s.

Mr Brister, Conisbrough, 20.

Mr Colbeck £20.

Mr Crane, Kilnhurst £14

Mr Gardner, Liverpool £120.

Mr Lane, Fenwick 18.

Mr Wilson, Mexborough, £15.

Mr Schofield £110.

Mr Elliott, Sheffield £100.

Mrs Scott, Doncaster £52.

Mr F.E.Nicholson, Doncaster (salary not state).

Mr Oxley, Conisbrough, £20

Mr Downes of Balby £20

Mr Bingham Mexborough, £15.

Mr Harrison, Conisbrough £20.

Mr Holmes, Mexborough £16

The first 12 in the above list were thrown out by the Board, and it was determined to ballot for the last six. After the merits of each of the six have been fully discussed, the ballot was taken and resulted in three voting from Mr Holmes, one for Mr Nicholson, and one for Mr Harrison.

The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Holmes informing him of his appointment, and that his duties will commence on 9 October next

The board next proceeded to discuss an application from Mr Ferdinand asking for an advance of salary.

Eventually it was proposed by Major Grantham, seconded by Mr Blyth and carried unanimously. “That £20, which Mr Ferdinand now receives as Clerk be added to his salary as master.

The board next proceeded to arrange Aston harvest holidays.

Major Grantham proposed and Mr Hill seconded, “that the annual summer holidays commenced on Friday 29 th inst. and terminate on 29 September.”
