Conisborough Wel. 0, Shipcroft Utd. 0

The visit of the unbeaten Barnsley Nelson League leaders, Shipcroft, attracted the biggest crowd of the season to the Welfare ground on Saturday.

A feature of the game was the fine form shown by the respective defences and the forwards had little or no chance to shine in front of goal against quick tackling and strong kicking by Evans and Haigh for Welfare and Godfrey and Beeson for Shipcroft.

Conisborough took up the attack from the kick off and in the first few minutes Fenton saved well by diving at the feet of Whitehead.

Shipcroft then had a turn and Ross shot wide when well placed following a clever run by Caunt. Welfare returned to the attack and Barks broke through to scrape the upright with a fast ground shot that had Fenton beaten and a few minutes later the goalkeeper did well to turn a fierce drive from Haigh over the bar for a corner.

On resuming Shipcroft attacked and Marshall and Ross. On the right wing, were prominent in several strong raids. But the Conisborough defence stood firm, and Walker in goal was never seriously troubled. Towards the end only a fine display of goalkeeping by Fenton prevented Welfare from passing into the “semis”.

The respective left-backs; Haigh and Godfrey carried off the honours in a good game, and on this showing the replay at Wombwell should be well worth seeing. Others who did well for Conisborough were Evans, Roberts and Howarth, and Fenton. Horsfield and Ross did well for Shipcroft.

“Gate” receipts amounted to £2. 2s.
