Feeble Sliding in the Sludge
Hull City Res 3, Denaby United 0
Denaby United were decidedly wrong side out on Saturday, when they have rarely done themselves justice.
For the two previous seasons they have wound up their campaign on the Anlaby Road ground in summer weather on a dry turf but with no better result than on Saturday, when they made their first acquaintance this season with mud and did not at all take kindly to it.
The Hull ground, though new-drained, is like Oakwell on the “soggy” side and last Saturday after the squalls of the morning, it was a skating rink at one end and heavy and sticky all over.
This by no means accounted fully for Denaby´s poor showing however. The side seemed to be suffering from re-action after the tension of the cup-tie, and was loose and out of joint.
The re-adjustment of the forward line improved it rather than otherwise, for young Briggs was one of the few successes of the visiting side, and made Hamilton a really good partner, while Chambers was sound enough in his original and natural position as wing half.
Godfrey and Shaw were as disappointing as they had been satisfying the previous week.
