Mr. W. E. Sykes
Former Conisborough Headmaster
Mr. Wilfrid E. Sykes, until three years ago headmaster of Station Road School, Conisborough, died at his home in Church Street, Mexborough, on Friday at the age of 63.
He leaves a widow, one son and two daughters, one of whom is in India.
Mr. Sykes came to the Mexborough district in 1904 as headmaster of Garden Street, Mixed School. He was a native of Huddersfield. In 1912 he became the first headmaster of the Adwick Road School, Mexborough.
From 1916 to 1918 he served with the Garrison Artillery, and reached the rank of captain.
He left the teaching profession for a time, but returned to become headmaster at Wrenthorpe, near Wakefield, and in 1922 he was appointed headmaster of Station Road School, Conisborough. He retired three years ago and has been in ill health for about twelve months.
The funeral took place at Mexborough on Monday. Funeral arrangements were by Mr. H. Huntington, 11, Church Street, and Doncaster Road, Mexborough.
