Perilous Position of 16 Miners at Denaby.

On Wednesday evening an alarming accident happened at Denaby Main Colliery.

At 10 o’clock a large number of the miners reached the pit bank in order to go down for the night shift and the first cage, containing 16 colliers, was being lowered.

When the cage had got about halfway down the shaft, it was noticed that the gear gave a sudden jerk. The colliers knew that something serious had happened and eagerly made enquiries.

It was ascertained that from some inexplicable cause, the “conductor” had got out of order, and that the cage had stuck fast.

Notwithstanding the great speed at which the cage was descending when the mishap occurred, fortunately, none of the men were injured; but for three hours the men had to remain in their perilous position, not being liberated before two o’clock yesterday morning.
