October 1879

Mexborough & Swinton Times, Oct 17

SINGLE CRICKET MATCH.

This match was played at the Conisbro’ cricket ground , on the 8th ult., between MR. Batty, of Conisbro’ lodge, and Mr. B. J. Dawson, of Conisbro’. Mr. Batty won the toss and elected to bat. Although he has played with the All England eleven in several matches, he was not able to make a long stand against the bowling of Dawson, who hit his leg stump with a trimmer.

Dawson next handled the bat, and began hitting hard, but did not reign long, his opponent sending one up, which shot, and Dawson failed to stop it, caused him to retire.

Mr. Batty went to the wicket again, and showed good defence, but was not able to get the ball far away from the wickets. Mr. Batty was in his old form, and no doubt had it-been a fine day and a lively wicket, he would have shown some good cricket.

The following are the scores:-

Mr. Batty bowled Dawson, 5 ; do. 7, total 12.

Mr. R. J. Dawson, bowled Batty, 7 ; do. 6, total 13.
