The Sports.

The “feast” was celebrated in like manner to that of last year, i.e. conviviality and sports and a very merry time has been spent.

The sports which took place on Monday and Tuesday were well patronised by the villagers, and the public of the district, doubtless owing in no small degree to the beautiful weather, which prevailed.

The races came off in the field use for the purposes of the Cricket Club, and it was in connection with the club that the sports were given.

There were a marked improvement on last year and the committee who are charge of the arrangements are to be congratulated on the result of their labours.

This the first day sports were as follows:

120 yards flat race, first prize, a silver plated teapot and sugar basin won by W.Belk; second prize, a handsome reel stand, secured by W.Woolhouse.

Bowling at the stumps for which half a dozen knives and forks were given, showed S.Horch to be the winner.

440 yard hurdle race, first prize, a silverplated cruet stand, A.Fitzgeorge; second prize, a silver flask, A. Wilson.

The three legged race for which the prize offered was to sporting knives, was obtained by W.Bamforth

150 yard hurdle race, first prize, a gilt timepiece, won by A.Fitzgeorge; second prize a flask won by W.H.Law, of Swinton.

880 yards flat race, first prize a silver cup, T.Kelly; second prize, a pair of tablespoons, A.Fowler.

Throwing at the stumps, for which an ink stand was given, was secured by J Tooley of Ardsley.

Forks. Throwing the cricket ball, a pair of silverplated salts was offered, and this was easily procured by George Briggs

Mr Greaves was referee, Mr Needham officiated as Judge and Mr Simpson starter.

The prizes were given away each day by Mrs Greaves.

A cricket match was played between the Mexborough and Conisborough clubs on the latter-day, but had to be a drawn game with the score stood thus:

Conisborough 157, Mexborough, 53 for five wickets.

Music, was supplied by a brass band from Sheffield (Mr George Turner)

We should state that the prizes valued altogether, about £30, and that, with one or two exceptions, they were given by the club
