Unfriendly Conisbroites
William Smith, cow keeper, was charged with assaulting Joseph Thompson, general dealer, of the same village, on the 31st ult
Mr Hall appeared on behalf of the defence.
The complainant stated that on Monday last he had occasion to go into a blacksmith’s shop at Conisborough and whilst there, he met with Smith, who said, “next time thou hast anything to slaver about me pull off your clothes and go outside.”
Witness replied that he had no occasion to do so, until defended again used most abusive and threatening language.
In reply to Mr Hall, complainant said he was not the cause of the threats being used; he had not said anything about defendant having been in jail.
Joseph Burton, blacksmith, stated that the disturbance took place in a shop, and heard the defendant use the language he was accused of saying.
By Mr Hall: I never heard complainant saying anything about defendant having been to prison.
Charles Burton, corroborated after the threatening language, and in answer to Mr Hall said he heard the defendant say if complainant circulated any rumours about the neighbourhood of Swinton concerning his having been to prison he would pull his b – – – neck out.
The case was dismissed.
